Donald Trump‘s daughter Ivanka abruptly cut short an
interview with Cosmopolitan magazine, after chastizing the interviewer for framing
questions with too much “negativity.”
Things evidently got heated as the interviewer — Prachi
Gupta, a senior writer with the magazine — asked Ivanka about her father’s new
plans for child care and maternity leave.
Republican candidate Trump’s child care and maternity
leave plan, which deviates greatly from the typical Conservative stance on paid
leave, offers new mothers six weeks of paid maternity leave, dependent care
savings accounts for families and tax deductions for stay-at-home parents.
Things started off rather well between the two women
before the tone shifted. At the outset, Gupta asked Ivanka why it’s taken so
long for her father to come out with his policy, when his opponent, Hillary
Clinton, released hers well over a year ago.
Rather than answer why Trump’s policy delivery is
delayed, Ivanka, 34, runs down the policy elements, saying “It’s comprehensive,
not only relating to family and maternity leave, but also relating to child
care… our plan is the first to address this in a comprehensive way.”
When Gupta zooms in on paternity leave and same-sex
couples’ maternity leave, Ivanka stumbles over her words, saying that only
women will get paid leave (not men), and directs Gupta to the Trump campaign
website, where “the policy is fleshed out online.”
The interviewer then asks, for clarification, if a male
same-sex couple who adopt will receive any paid leave.
“Well, those are your words, not mine,” answered Ivanka,
laughing. “Those are your words. The plan, right now, is focusing on mothers,
whether they be in same-sex marriages or not.”
Ivanka’s laughter stopped after the next question asked
by Gupta, who wondered why Trump’s viewpoint on pregnancy and paid leave has
changed so drastically; in 2004, Trump said that pregnancy is an
“inconvenience” for business.
Growing agitated, Ivanka retorted that Gupta’s
characterization of her father was “unfair.”
“So I think that you have a lot of negativity in these
questions,” she said. “And I think my father has put forth a very comprehensive
and really revolutionary plan to deal with a lot of issues. So I don’t know how
useful it is to spend too much time with you on this if you’re going to make a
comment like that.”
Even after Gupta tries to apologize and quotes the 2004
NBC interview when Trump made the statement about pregnancy, Ivanka abruptly
ends the conversation three questions later:
“I’m going to jump off, I have to run. I apologize,” she
said.
“OK, well, thank you for your time,” replied Gupta.
“Sounds good, thanks,” concluded Ivanka.
Trump’s daughter is the Executive Vice-President of
Development & Acquisitions at the Trump Organization.
The Republican candidate is expected to release more
details about his policy plan on Thursday.
