The Tlokwe Local Municipality has
started with the process of relocating more than 130 families to a new
settlement. The objective is to eradicate informal settlements in the municipal
area.
Some families have been informally occupying the land for over ten years, but now they have been given fully serviced stands and there are plans to build them houses on the site.
Access to basic services was a struggle that many had to endure for years.
“I have been staying in an informal settlement and now we have been relocated. We’ve got water and toilets ... I’m satisfied our dignity has been restored,” adds one community member.
The allocation of this new stands will be followed by a process of building new low cost houses for beneficiaries.
Tlokwe Local Municipality spokesperson Victor Boqo says, “We are moving them to areas that have infrastructure like running water and toilets. In the next coming few months to come we will be getting them RDP houses as the municipality.”
The municipality further says the model will be copied in other sections where there is a high demand for houses.
