Despite the storm brewing around them
athletes Wayde van Niekerk and Caster Semenya evidently have no animosity
between them.
Wayde and Caster have found
themselves in the midst of a social media frenzy, after Wayde was given an Audi
R8 worth R1.8 million.
The athlete
who broke a world record at the recent Rio Olympics was handed over the keys to
his flashy new wheels at OR Tambo International on Wednesday.
While the majority celebrated Wayde's
gift, it also quickly became a talking point with some people questioning why
Caster had not been given an Audi as well.
This led to a
full blown debate around the matter with high-profile personalities including
Siv Ngesi and Anele Mdoda adding their voice to the conversation.
Despite the commentary surrounding
them Wayde and Caster are evidently on good terms, and unfazed by the
negativity.
Responding to
one followers comments on why Caster had not been given a car, Wayde said that
he loves and respects her.
Wayde van said “I love and respect @caster800m so let's not compare our
blessings. And use our talents to inspire each other.”
Caster responded to Wayde telling him
to enjoy his gifts.
“hommie
go enjoy your gifts. You have worked hard for this, salute”
Audi SA has since come out to explain
that Wayde was given the R8 because he had been chosen to be an ambassador for
the car company before the Olympics, and that the car was part of the deal.
It has also
since emerged that BMW is apparently in talks with Caster about becoming an
ambassador for the brand.
